somehow found the frame narrative to be more interesting than the actual short stories, which is something an anthology story has straight up never managed to do for me before! not really sure if that's really a compliment, but like,, it's something! i think i need to take a break from reading anything written by palahniuk for a few months or so, because i could handle his writing style for the 200ish pages it took for me to finish fight club, but the constant cynicism and moderate-to-severe edginess got kinda grating over the course of 400 pages. anyways almost all these people were just absolutely terrible! watching them go insane was interesting but i hope they all died in the end!

ged hard carried this book for me tbh! like the storytelling itself wasn't BAD don't get me wrong but he was such a compelling protagonist and if the main character had been someone more boring then i fear i would have dnf'd this........ just a very wordy book with a lot of worldbuilding the characters are really what got me thru this one

picked this one up bc i really enjoyed the movie and was curious what the book was like! while overall i still like the movie more bc i feel it trimmed what little fat the book had while also making some of the more abstract plot moments a little more understandable, the book is definitely worth reading too. somehow even gayer than the movie, which makes sense considering what i know about the author but it was still a nice bonus to me lmao

maybe someday i'll find one of these short horror reads that i actually like! anyways i honestly nearly DNF'd this bc i found the characters and their dynamic to be incredibly obnoxious, but the book was so damn short i figured i'd just finish it anyways. for something that was touted in reviews as ~Sooooo Disturbing~ there were like 2 parts that even had the POTENTIAL to be scary and literally a single kill that was admittedly kinda fucked up but not really Extreme. if this book scared you i'm sorry to say you're a total lightweight 💔

this one was soooo up-and-down for me? like it's been a day since i finished it and i'm just still not sure how to feel about it?? i didn't LOVE it but i can't really put into words why that is...... i know at least a few reasons why i didn't hate it, though! shiori honestly rly grew on me as a protag, she seemed kinda flat to me at first but idk that development just started hittin i guess! i'm also a really big fan of the original fairy tale this book is based on, and the spins the author put on it were pretty neat to me, especially the late-game twist with raikama. i'll probably go on to read the sequel, hopefully it'll leave me feeling a bit more satisfied :P

thinking about how i read this book in 8th grade on a direct recommendation from my english teacher?? like i don't really regret it, even now i still find it pretty good, but also i was almost the same age as the protagonist is when i read this for the first time and i think that might have altered my brain chemistry in some way that probably wasn't very great

having never read a youtuber book™ before i had no idea how i was gonna end up feeling about this one, but thankfully this was a real fun read 👍 it took me a second to get past the two main protagonists pretty clearly being rhett and link, just younger, but after a while i started to get more into the actual plot and more or less got over it (though i did still occasionally visualize these actual real men in their mid-40's in some of the situations in this book which was simultaneously funny and wildly distracting)

lori steadily became such an obviously horrible person that i nearly DNF'd around 60% or so, and honestly? she somehow just kept getting worse, really probably wouldn't have missed out on much if i'd just stopped there. i appreciate that it didn't seem like the writing actually tried to excuse any of the awful, AWFUL shit she did but the way she blames all those awful things on her victims and seemingly never seriously thinks that any of it was HER fault just made her so insufferable to read about i was at my wit's end by the last chapter. you and your serial killer boyfriend are perfect for each other girl, hope you got what was comin for you in the end 👍

another unfortunate victim of the "book recommended to me by a tiktok that pitched it as something completely different from what it actually is which causes me to not like it as much because it's just so not what i was expecting" curse, though thankfully not the most egregious example bc i did still enjoy the book! dark academia it was not, but it did have some interesting musings on gender and a neat take on vampires that i haven't really seen anything similar to before, also probably serving as a metaphor for several things, most of which probably went over my head. also the first book i've ever read that revolves around fanfic/fandom in such a prominent and  genuinely sincere way, which was also quite neat to me! hearing ao3 get mentioned in a real published work nearly made me do a spit take but i still had fun :]
