Its obvious why Kenneth Branagh chose to base the first Thor movie off of this book. The story is amazing and easily sets Loki up as the sympathic antihero and occasional villain we know and love today. My only problem with the book is that the artwork is a bit of a turn off, but I’m sure plenty of people would disagree.

This is a book about commitment issues, classism, bisexuality, PTSD, language, and rape culture in Ireland. The MC isn’t likable but the story is compelling enough to keep you reading, especially if you’re a language nerd or have any interest in Ireland or the Irish language. In a way, its sort of a metaphor for how indigenous peoples might view those who have colonized them — as England did to both Ireland and Hong Kong.

This is a great book and excellent points were made regarding the beauty industry and how white supremacy and colonization has impacted that industry, but towards the end of the book it became more of a love letter to radical feminism.

There were a lot of plot holes and the final act seemed to rely heavily on plot convenience. I really wasn't a fan either of how after everything the narrator's personal ideas of beauty still seemed to align perfectly with mainstream ideologies except for when it came to music. Listening to her complaining about how ugly she and her music was made her sound immature and shallow. It was like she hadn't learned anything at all.

It was disappointing and really made the story fall flat.
