This was my second time reading this volume, and I actually enjoyed it a LOT more the second time thru.
The first time, I wasn't certain if I would be invested in the story and the characters, and the later volumes really solidified to me that I would enjoy it. With that knowledge, and knowing where some of the story arcs of the characters go, I really enjoyed seeing the subtle foreshadowing and hints given in this first volume.
I cannot wait to start volume two now.
This is a great series for anyone looking for something a little creepy, that examines the darker side of human nature, and that has some great action later in the series.

I wanted to like this book, but I couldn't finish it. I got about 3/4 of the way thru, but then I just couldn't read further.
This story has several interesting components, but I think it would have made a much stronger short story, 40-50 pages tops, in and out. It basically introduces Malus Darkblade's goal, but then he ends up fighting new person, after new person, after new person on his way to his goal. There is next to no character interaction and development in the story.
Even more annoying, the action sort of felt ridiculously repetitive, malus gets smacked around, does a sneaky attack, Spit chomps on things, rinse repeat.
I have read many of the Black Library books, and I think this was one of the worst. I will not be reading further in the series. If you want to read about the Dark Elves do yourself a favor and just read the Sundering trilogy.

The story starts to pick up in this volume. Kaneki is past finding out he is a ghoul and is getting insight into ghouls' lives. This volume first introduces the ghoul investigators, and despite being someone who we might root for, they seem pretty creepy and bad.
This explores Darth Maul as a character, turns out, he is pretty one dimensional "I hate, therefore I destroy, but it leaves me empty, so I destroy more."
This volume is full of awesome action sequences and even a decent lightsaber fight.
It doesn't give any deeper insight into Maul, the lead up to Episode 1, or his training, but it was a decent quick paced action packed volume.
Worth reading to see more Darth Maul awesomness, but don't go in expecting more then some flashy fights, and some basic dialogue. The art work and the action are the reason to read it :)

Further continuation of this increasingly interesting story. Kaneki has started to meet a wide range of other ghouls, really giving him some perspective on them. There are also two pretty important fights in this volume.
This is well worth a read if you are a fan of the show. There are parts that I think easily warranted a 4-5 star rating, but other parts that were just ok. Realistically I think it is about a 3.5 rating as a whole.
The story shows the normal Rick and Morty hi-jinks, I think the writers and illustrators managed to capture the style of the show pretty well; however, the "main" storyline which is the first 3 parts of this volume are just ok, not amazing.
The best part of this was the few bonus shorts at the end, I thought these were hysterical and really let Summer and Beth shine in a funny light.
I'll be giving volume 2 a read eventually, as I think this was a decent read, but I won't be rushing out to read it right way.

The volumes have started to blend together for me some. This volume had a really interesting plot centered around the Gourmet, a ghoul who is trying to capture the perfect flavor, and has his eye on Kaneki. This leads to some pretty good action scenes, but some moments where I can't help but wonder when Ken is going to learn not to trust every single person he meets.
This volume contains the continuation of the Gourmet storyline, which has a suitably dramatic and exciting end.
My favorite part of this volume is the return of Nishio, and the development of his character as well as giving deeper nuanced meaning to what it means to be a ghoul. The volume at the end also begins to give greater insight into the Ghoul Investigators, their operation, and Amon.

While the past volumes were good, this is where a lot of the early groundwork of the series starts to pay off. Kaneki begins to get forced deeper into the world of ghouls, and a big show down is building up between ghouls and the ghoul investigators. We also finally re given a better description of the Kagune.
Honestly this is the volume that fully sold the series to me and convinced me I will completely finish it.

Stuff is really escalating in this story now! Superman has shifted from doing morally questionable things to outright obviously evil ones.
This one starts to heavily feature the Green Lantern corps, which is not an organization I have read a lot about, but I have to say their coverage really piqued my interest.
This series has been amazing, one thing I really like is that because it is an offshoot story, and not part of the main cannon the writers can really play around with lasting repercussions to heroes and deeper conflict between them.
