If you fancy some escapism (and let's face it who doesn't at the moment) then why not enjoy an intergalactic romp through space to 'the small, angry planet' of Toremi Ka. Following the misadventures of the crew of the Wayfarer, a mixed species hyperspace tunneling vessel, this novel transports the reader to the furthest reaches of the universe where an uneasy alliance threatens to unsettle the established hierarchy of the Galactic Commons. A tale of companionship (and the struggles of being trapped in a confined space with the same group of people for too long) Becky Chambers has constructed a vast and wholesome world full of vibrancy, automation and humour.
A Thousand Ships is everything I wanted and more, I feel this must be a gift from Athena herself. Homer's epic poems have always been a great source of inspiration for me and I am thrilled to see such an intelligent and modern interpretation of one of my favourite stories. Natalie Haynes shines a new light on the legendary tale which is typically composed of men and their 'heroic' deeds by giving a voice to the silenced women who endured just as much as their male counterparts, if not more, in the ten year war and subsequent fall of Troy. From the petulant goddesses to the self-destructive amazonian warrior to the royal women laid low by the abolition of their once illustrious citadel, the story is powerfully told from an all female perspective and provides a much needed outlet for the forgotten women of Greek history. Will certainly be rooting for Haynes in the women's prize.
