⚠️ "Here's a little advice for the next time we play: always take the dare."
⚠️ CW: Violence, terrorism, mass murder, suicide
Poignant. Raw. Harrowing. 'This Can Never Not Be Real' is a powerful commentary on terror and those unfortunate enough to be caught up in such abhorrent acts. Whilst this is a story about terrorism, it is not about the terrorists. Milano gives a voice to the innocents and reflects on what it means to survive and why we should not live in fear of what could happen.
A quaint community celebration-turned-nightmare, the plot follows the unfolding events of a coordinated, brutal terrorist attack through the unassuming eyes of five teenagers Ellie, Joe, Peaches, March and Violet as they find each other during a night of never ending terror.
The story is told from each of the five's POV and at first I struggled with the rapid switch in narrative but as the story went on found that this worked to build intensity and added to the feeling of disarray that the characters were going through.
Released in a year we marked 20 years of 9/11, terrorism is still an ever present and unpredictable threat that we all live with but reminds us of the human capacity for love and compassion.
