very interesting exploration of how colonialism affects a people as deep as seeping into their interpersonal relationships.

i have no idea where to begin, i am frankly nearly speechless about how to explain how much i loved this novel. to condense all of what i felt and experienced into a simple note feels almost like a betrayal.
zeyn joukhadar crafts the most exquisite prose that is almost poetic but not in excess; it does not swell with nonsensical metaphors or descriptions ripened with words that make no sense when combined together. rather his characters, the story, the circumstances- all of it is suspended in a somewhat melancholic quietness. it is hard-to-swallow grief and it is heavy, it makes you stop and survey each word carefully. there was deep, aching loss but there was also community, and so, so much love.
queer syrian-american trans boy and his love of birds/bird art wasn't a premise i thought i could have been enticed by before, but man, i am so glad i gave this book a chance, it is definitely one of my favourites.

powerful collection of essays on antigua, the eponymous small place. with firmness and emotion, jamaica kincaid tells us about her country, and how it suffers under the weariness that embodies antigua following the effects of colonialism. there is a beauty to her writing that does not take away from the ugliness that she desires to convey; whether it be the tyranny of governmental corruption, the ignorance of the white tourists, or even the infuriating behaviour and actions of the colonisers. admittedly, antigua is not a country that i know a lot about and this series of essays gave me an entry into the environment of the country; it doesn't hold the sanitised, overly technical, detached quality of traditional academic essays, rather she gives it a human touch that evokes empathy and rage for her, and for her people.

what an arresting and haunting collection of short stories! amparo dávila weaves her tales around the creeping sense of horror that arises from the unknown, from what cannot be categorised, and from what cannot be confirmed. it isn't the sort of horror that would pop you out of your pants, but it is thoughtful, with each story having their respective important message to convey.

what a haunting novella. adania shibli's prose is effective in what it wants to convey, and how.

i really admire those who can explain concepts with such accessible language. i do understand the importance of jargon, particularly in political theory, but accessibility is key and a sign that someone truly understands + wholeheartedly believes in what they are talking about and sankara demonstrates this ability.
Comrades, there is no true social revolution without the liberation of women. May my eyes never see and my feet never take me to a society where half the people are held in silence. I hear the roar of women's silence. I sense the rumble of their storm and feel the fury of their revolt.
