I loved this. I had never heard of these books before the Netflix series and so I was curious about them and I listened to the audiobook version all week and I loved every minute of it. I can't wait to start the next one. I appreciate that even though there is a sequel, the author does wrap up most of the loose ends for this story first so that it does feel as though it has resolved.

I can't wait until my kids are old enough that I can read this to them!

This book isn't bad, you definitely get your questions answered throughout the series and it does lay and intriguing mystery but one thing the series never answers is why it matters for the families to stay in power. The families seem so greedy and evil, so why is she trying so hard to save them, the love triangle was also pretty good, if a little predictable. it felt like they just kept trying to create a sense of urgency that wasn't really there, so the whole time you keep asking yourself if it is actually a big deal or if they just want to stay in power.

Personally, when it comes to whether or not an ancient unelected governing body should stay in power or not, I don't really care. I am never going to be like, "oh no, we should root for these guys, they seem really important." They seem like the bad guys and when she decides to stay and try and help them it gets a little hard to root for the main character because she is unrelatable. I think especially as an American she should have gone along with the plan less. I was reading it as an American and the whole time I kept thinking, who died and made these guys king?

Anyways, it isn't a bad read, but it is forgettable.

this was a really fun adventure and I appreciated that all of the magic and mystery seemed to follow a consistent set of rules which meant that once the world building was done it felt as realistic as it can when you are writing a book about people with the ability to do magic.

I really enjoyed reading this and appreciated that the book did resolve itself at the end so I didn't feel like I had been left waiting on a sequel that might never come.

This was an interesting read but I don't think it was for me. I couldn't figure out what the point of the book was supposed to be. It felt like it escalated needlessly and the resolve seemed too easy. It was a nice way to pass the time but it wasn't one of those books that you think about a week after you finish it. To me I finished it and I literally just barely remembered that I read it when good reads asked me if I finished it.

This book started off so well in laying out an intriguing mystery of who her father was, why she was chosen to have the secret tablet, why someone was trying to kill her and what was going on, and then the book just ended and then I found out that the author never wrote a second book and that I will never get my questions answered. That is so frustrating.

I feel like you shouldn't write a book like there is a planned sequel unless you have some kind of outline for where the mystery is going and where it should end. I feel like she was just laying the groundwork for a big mystery and she figured she would work it out later and then later she couldn't figure out what the mystery would be and just gave up.

I liked this book up until I found out that it never resolves itself, so if you are comfortable with that then it is a good read. However, if you are like me and you want answers to your questions, then I wouldn't waste my time with this book.

An excellent follow up to her first novel in this series and a really good read. I was concerned that it would be difficult to follow since I have never read sense and sensibility, but I actually think that it made the book more fun because I didn't know ahead of time who the real villains of the story would be the way I did with her first book pride and premeditation.

I thought this was a really fun adventure and I would highly recommend it to any Jane Austen fans and fans of mysteries as I thought she stayed really true to Jane Austen's style but the mystery was also very well written.

Abigail Rook left her home and her family in search of adventure and found it. Now she investigates paranormal crime with a sherlock-holmesesque man named Jackaby. On this adventure, Jackaby and Miss Rook are sent to investigate the site of a dinosaur dig to hide their real investigation, the strange circumstances under which Mrs. Brisbee has died. They are distracted from their investigation when strange claw mark and small animals begin to go missing. Now it looks as though a thought to be extinct creature may have returned to ravage the land. Will they be able to solve the case in time?

I really like the Jackaby books. I love the sense of feeling like Watson. Sometimes when you are reading a mystery you can guess the ending by the clues that are laid out in the book, but since the answers to most of these mysteries are also themselves mysterious it is hard to guess at exactly what the author wants to reveal until the moment he chooses to reveal it, although the clues are always still there. This series is delightful and I cannot wait to read the next one.

I can't even finish it. I feel like it is not as advertised and I gave it a really fair shot, I am like two hours into the audiobook and I am never excited to start listening again. I just don't want to waste my time with it anymore. I have so many books in my to read list that I would rather get started on one of those than waste anymore time on this.
