this book is beautiful, dark, and incredibly fucked up.

it tells the story of two sisters dealing with the aftermath of their mother’s suicide attempt as they are sent to live with their father in new york. the different first-person accounts made for an interesting read, especially as the story turned darker and darker.

definitely read the content warnings before picking up this book, but i absolutely recommend it. only docked half a star because the ending felt a little abrupt, but that’s just me.

wow wow wow, what a book. black buck was a rollercoaster of emotions — mostly anger and stress — from the perspective of someone who was willing to sacrifice it all to get ahead. it’s a great satire of corporate/tech culture and the racism that exists in those spaces and i enjoyed reading it.

i will say though that the some of the narrative/writing style wasn’t really for me. i get that it’s meant to be a satire from a more immature perspective, but parts of it made me roll my eyes. regardless, it was a pretty quick read so i would recommend it.

i first read this book as a teenager over a decade ago, and it had a huge impact on me at the time. re-reading it now at almost 30 (and now much less severely mentally ill lol) i still hold it in high regard. it’s such a beautifully written, honest look at depression and womanhood and will always be a favorite of mine.

The Birthday Party by Laurent Mauvignier

Did not finish book.
i really wanted to like this book but i just couldn’t get past the writing style. so many unnecessarily long sentences, which i’m sure some people are fine with, but made it a headache to try to get through.
