As a queer F1 fan, this book has personally offended me. The author clearly hasn't watched a race in her life and doesn't know anything about F1. Traveling non-stop for 9 months straight and living in hotels? A motorhome? Overtaking under yellow flag? No homophobia in F1? Yeah, right.
And don't even get me started on the terms she used (wtf is qualifiers) or how wrong and unrealistic the team structure and dynamic was.
Being best friends with your teammat is not a thing in F1. You don't work with your teammate, they are your biggest rival. You may help them when team orders are involved, but being bffs with your teammate is not a thing. Has she ever heard about brocedes? If you want a great story about childhood best friends turned enemies, look it up. Like David Croft said "everything but lovers".
And Harper? I hated him. He was so annoying and didn't have the work ethic it takes to be in F1. He was so incredibly immature. Also, if he was in the foster system since he was 10 and struggled to get sponsors, where did he get the money to have a karting career? Motorsports are expensive. There's a reason most F1 drivers come from rich families. The rare exceptions had supportive parents that worked three jobs to pay for their kids karting career, like Lewis Hamilton, or parents who sold their house to be able to afford karting, like Esteban Ocon.
And what he did to Kian in the third act is cheating and it's unforgivable.
Also, they never had a conversation to air out why what they did to each other at the beginning hurt the other so bad. Harper sort of explained when he confessed that his parents abandoned him, but then they started fucking and never talked about it again. Suddenly, Harper knows Kian's dad was a shitty dad but we never see them have that talk after it was made such an important plot point in the book.
The only reason I'm not giving this book 1 star, is because I reserve 1 star reviews for books that are deeply morally wrong.
If you want to read a good and accurate F1 romance, look up Cross the Line by Simone Soltani.
