Love Letters and Thirst Tonics

Hailey Blackwood

DID NOT FINISH: 29%

This may be mean because this is the second book I've started today where the FMC is just unbearable, but...
This is just terrible. I really wanted to like this book. Cozy fantasy? That's right up my alley.
It seems this author never heard of show don't tell. Why are you telling my the FMC is a badass in the first chapter? Show it to me, don't tell me. Also, her internal monologue was horrible and cringy. I don't even mind the modern dialogue in a historical setting, but the writing was just bad, and again, cringy. I cannot overstate how cringy ot was.
And why is she so mean to the MMC? I get he was rude when they first met, but that's her best friend's customer, she can't go screaming to every slightly rude potential customer, she won't get any sales that way. Also, I wouldn't want to buy a potion that could have side effects that aren't clearly stated in advance either. Why is he wrong for not wanting to buy a potion that may GIVE HIM HOOFS? And how are you, in good conscience, recommending a business that regularly sells you defective products? And why can't her best friend give her an effing discount once in a while?
By this point we haven't spent enough time with the MMC for me to really form an opinion on him, so I don't have many criticisms of him, only that no matter how hangry you are, that doesn't give you the right to be mean to customer service people. And it would be nice not to further insult the destroyed livelihood of an obviously distressed woman, no matter how bitchy she was to you before.
Save yourself the second hand embarrassment and constant eyerolls and just skip this book.
