onceandfuturebooknerd's Reviews (1.02k)
First let's take a moment to appreciate how absolutely stunning this book is. *waits 5 seconds* Now for the review part! The Court of Miracles was an intriguing and rather fast-paced story set in 1800s France. Our main gal Nina was a BADASS and her love for her sisters (blood or not) was commendable. I mean I would probably act EXACTLY the same.
But sadly I didn't enjoy this book as much as I wanted to - the plot was oftentimes confusing and the time jumps were just too much especially when there were no indicators of the time passing (such as the beginning of the chapter saying "2 years later").
I do believe however that the sequels could be spectacular so I am excited to read them! Characters-wise I adored Nina's relationship with little Ettie and I was happy to see that this was the center of the story.
There was no apparent romantic thread despite Nina having 3 (??) possible love interests (do I have a favourite in that department in case the story does develop in the direction of a love story? HELLS YES, I mean the stoic revolutionary St. Juste stole my heart right away. There is nothing like a character with zero sense of humor). BUT I did love this multiple-possible-love-interests thread. I saw some people complaining about it but hello the girl is young and her lovelife is not the most important part of her story, eh eh? Let her develop feelings for a certain someone (St. Juste! St. Juste) in good time, okay!
I gave The Court of Miracles 3.5/5 stars. BUT I am really excited for the sequels! I would love to get more from all these characters and the historic aspects of it (especially when told in the "legend" format) gave me chills!

This was so many shades of perfect and I SO recommend!!
OKAY HOLD MY PIE BECAUSE THIS WAS SOOOO CUTE?!?! Like I loved the first volume and thought it was super cute but this one literally blew me away? It was literally 10x cuter than the first volume (I didn't think that was possible) and made me cry on multiple occasions. Just a very wholesome gay love story in the world of hockey. Like imagine All for the Game but everyone is SOFT and in love and just sweet? I borrowed these from a friend but I SHALL BUY THEM NOW, OKAY, CAUSE I NEED THEM ON MY BOOKSHELF. To stare at them lovingly and maybe stroke them every now and then. And don't even get me started on all the characters, from Bitty and Jack to SHITTY (what a king!), Lardo and the other guys. They were so precious.
Did this review make any sense or was it just me gushing? Possibly the latter but SERIOUSLY YOU GUYS THIS WAS SO SWEET, I obviously gave Check, Please! Book 2 5/5 stars. It deserves every damn star.

I don't even know how to start with this review. Loveless was everything I could've wanted and more! I had great expectations and it managed to bull past them and seize the "best of 2020" throne for me. Loveless is a beautiful story of self-discovery and friendship - there were so many quotes highlighting how IMPORTANT friendship really is and how we shouldn't consider it to be "less" than romantic love. And don't even get me started on Georgia and Pip, Jason and Rooney, SUNIL (love this baby) and everyone else! Such a wonderful squad!
Also Georgia's struggles of accepting her sexuality (she is ace-aro) were very relatable and described in the most realistic, thought-provoking way. It's okay to not want (or not be able to want) a romantic love - you'll be just fine and not alone and sad.
I gave Loveless ALL THE STARS, okay? (so 5/5 ugh how limiting). This book was everything and it made me all shades of emotional.

This was such a cute queer story about love and fighting for what you want and basically just slaaaaying, okay, slaying! Liz is a bi black girl - and a total queen as she comes to realize throughout the book! I really liked the romance (even if it did seem a bit insta lovey - but if I'm being honest this book could easily have a hundred more pages! And then the whole plot wouldn't be as rushed!) and that one special friendship between Liz and her ex-best friend was *emoji*
I loved how this story explained it perfectly how societal expectations push us into boxes that are hard to escape - and I am super hyped to see what Leah Johnson writes next!! Maybe a sequel?

This was such an intriguing book - we follow a gymnastics team of 6 girls who are preparing for the Olympics. But when a dark secret about sexual abuse in their coaching team is revealed their wolrd is turned upside down and they need to get back on their feet before the games.
I really loved this important story that highlights abuse in sports and presented it, if you ask me, in an appropriate manner - there were no reveals for shock value. Despite some initial doubt I was very happy to find out that most of the girls (and even the world) stood behind the victim. That made Break the Fall an empowering read and I really wish every victim could be treated as this girl was - with respect and support, not met with doubt and speculation.
There were some really incredible scenes in the book that showed how girls from different countries stood together in face of sexual assault - teal. <3
I gave Break the Fall 4/5 stars. This book made me cry over the injustice of it all but its more inspiring scenes also made clear the power that lies within us if we just decide to stand together and defy the abusers.

I was kinda scared to finally finish this book (I started it back in May, welp) because of so many mixed reviews. I was afraid I was gonna like Snow?! But my worries were for nothing cause he was an incredible wanker throughout the book. Talking about unlikeable characters turned villains. Which is GREAT, because I would literally dump a bucket of ice cold water on my head if I started liking Snow.
Sejanus though? He had some Peeta qualities and I just wanted to hug the hell out of him. I think he would've been the hero of this story were it not a villain origin story. This baby deserved better.
Overall I think this was a nice addition to the existing THG world! We got to learn the origin of The Hanging Tree, explore Snow's utter coldness and just see how the Hunger Games really developed - this might've been my favourite part of the book! The Hunger Games were even messier in its formative years - and it's a show where a bunch of kids slaughter each other.
I gave The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes 4/5 stars. Not a masterpiece but I'd definitely recommend it to THG fans!
