This book started off slow, laying the groundwork and taking its time and then somewhere around the middle mark BAM! By the end of it I was questioning everything and finally kind of understood all the little pieces of foreshadowing, which made me love the book that much more. Even if I was a bit confused - like Jess, our protagonist.
The Truants is a brilliant example of a dark academia book: a squad of pretty unlikeable characters with loose morals, a mysterious death in the group, passion verging on hate, a lot of academics talk (which I LOVE! I need to read more of Christie's works now), and existential crisis. And by the latter I mean mine because wow, as much as I disliked both Alec and Lorna, they both made me want to throw caution to the wind and maybe book a plane ticket to some far-off place.
If you love dark academia, I recommend you check out The Truants! But please do check the trigger warnings because there are quite a few.
Some TW: Substance abuse, abortion, gaslighting, death, etc.
