I cried so much while reading that I surprised myself. What a story. I didn't even know that I cared about WW1.

Part fantasy, part sci-fi, part thriller. This books has you determined to understand the fate (and the history!) of Piranesi at every turn. The blurb doesn't do it justice. It could never do it justice. A complicated adventure

Reads a bit like fan fiction, with too much banter to be realistic in 90% of the dialogue, but I didn't mind! I enjoyed the politics. I think the pacing was a bit off, with a slow first 3/4 and then a densely packed last 1/4. Excited to see what comes next!

This book had an amazing premise, but didn't deliver in a way that I found compelling. I saw a review that said something along the lines of "this book needed a science editor so badly" and I can't help but agree. After the third marine biologist says "those (captive born) cetaceans should be released into the wild!" it became clear to me that the author 1. Didn't know as much about marine science as someone writing a mermaid sci-fi book should and 2. Was going to spend the entire book proving to me that they DID know science with ridiculous philosophizing and dense prose. After a certain point I was just reading for the sake of finishing.

Side note: captive bred animals don't have the immune system to survive wild ecosystems! Releasing those orcas and dolphins into the wild instead of a sanctuary would actually be incredibly inhumane. Tf.
