None of my guy best friends throughout my life were EVER physically affectionate like Maddox is with Braxton. It’s disturbing. Also, having a plus size FMC with a nickname of Curly Fry seems like a really shitty choice on the author’s part. Also there’s no chemistry? And I got 34% in and just felt so bored. It’s a no from me.
There is a fine line between taking inspiration from something and straight up copying it. This is trying SO HARD to be ACOTAR and SJM in general. The 3 fae males you first meet are described exactly like Rowan, Ruhn, and Rhys. And it’s very beauty and the beast (like ACOTAR). And I know this is supposed to be a modern day situation but i don’t know about anyone else but when TikTok is mentioned in a book-it takes me right out of the story. Instagram is fine. TikTok? Hard pass. I can’t explain it. I didn’t get very far but this is def a bad copy of ACOTAR.
I actually was enjoying this and enjoyed the writing but At 42% the MCs had exchanged MAYBE 15 words. It’s a lot of inner dialogue and reminiscing on their relationship which ended at 18 so it is two 20 something’s pining for a teenage relationship. The only spice at this point was TWO descriptive sex flashbacks and it was sex between two teenagers. I draw the line. I know this is an adult novel, but we don’t need details of teens having sex. Absolutely not. These MCs will discuss their relationship (or lack there of) with ANYONE except each other. Oh and also nothing much had happened at this point. Just bored. But the main thing for me was the teen sex scenes. Big ick.
Hard pass. The back of the book makes this sound like there was an accident tying these two people together but LOL THE “ACCIDENT” is the fact that Helen’s sister committed suicide by jumping in front of Grant’s suv to kill herself. And it’s very quickly explained away as a suicide on page 3. This just didn’t work for me. I wanted fun not traumatic. I can’t imagine rooting for Helen when her pov was so freaking dark and tragic. Not the vibe. Not for me.
