The Faceless Old Woman Who Secretly Lives In Your Home

Jeffrey Cranor, Joseph Fink

DID NOT FINISH

I went into this expecting Night Vale-esque weirdness and the horror of the original Faceless Woman we got to know through the podcast. This turned out to just be a pirate story. My bad, maybe? But it was very boring to me.

I don't see myself finishing this and might have to accept that I've outgrown YA and all its common tropes for good.

“Help out? What is it with you and ‘helping out?’ You’re going to ‘help out’ with chores. ‘Help out’ with raising our baby. ‘Help out’ with finding me a new job. Isn’t this your house, too? Your home? Your child? And if I work, don’t you spend my pay, too? Why do you keep saying ‘help out’ like you’re volunteering to pitch in on someone else’s work?"

I wish I could say this book was more shocking or gut-punching than it really was.

How the author wove together statistics and data shining light on the misogyny Korean women (and women all around the world) have to endure with the life-story of the main character worked out so, so well. A really impressive novel.

With so much going on ... in general right now, there's no comfort like reading a Kingfisher novel. Characters that feel absolutely real trying to cope with extreme and horrifying situations through humor and their bonds to others (people, pets, objects, places ...).

Not a scary horror novel, but such an entertaining and disturbing one.

The writing is so, so off-putting.

I've been into the Enneagram for about 10 years now and this book was an amazing, easily digestible and honestly soothing addition. A positive and understanding look at all of the types that's far less judgemental than most other Enneagram books I've read. SJ has so much love and wisdom in her heart.

One of the more accurate (to my individual experience) sp 2 type descriptions I've come across!

While there were some parts I didn't care about and personally couldn't take a lot from, overall it was a very educating read! I'm much more aware of how I listen to others now and how important being listened to is for every single person.
