darius the great is not okay. but he will be. didn't expect to cry so much at the end. what i liked the most about the book is how it explored darius' various complex relationships with his family and best friend. excited to read the follow-up novel!
emotional funny hopeful lighthearted reflective fast-paced

the only 5-star book this year, and now one of my absolute favorite books of all time. the characters and the story are just SO sweet and wholesome. the writing is so good, the romantic subplot wasn't forced (actually one of the best parts of the book), and the whole book is a kind and gentle reminder not to be racist, homophobic, xenophobic, and discriminatory.

PS. i kept imagining ewan mcgregor as arthur and if there's an adaptation of this book, i'd love for him to play that character!!

an anthology of sweet, heartwarming stories revolving a cast of characters. i liked the book, but it does read like a play sometimes. i'm not sure like it enough to read the second book but who knows!

loved that all of the stories feature filipino characters and have at least some tie to particular filipino culture, traditions, and folklore. seriously a good collection of stories that range from cutesy romance to chilling ghost stories to black mirror-esque situations.

standout stories:
- milagroso
- a spell for foolish hearts
- asphalt, river, mother, child
- hurricane heels (we go down dancing)
- a canticle for lost girls
