The leading lady is a twit with far too many issues, chief among them being that she is both a pathologically insecure doormat and a judgmental harpy.

Her inner emotional life doesn't track and the writer falls back on the standard, and frankly boring, trope of plain jane girl inexplicably enthralls enigmatic hottie. Only this one has a 'weight problem' (my gosh she's a size 6! *eye roll) and has an eating disorder. Ugh.

I gave this 4 stars because there are no half star options. It's really a 3.5. It's starts off as a delight, a quirky meet-cute with lively banter and enough steam to pique my interest but as I was expecting a modern, interracial romance between adults, I got a lot of adolescent angst and juvenile avoidance. Are we still relying on fear of honesty as a plot device?

I'm dying for a story with all the sexy fun and a real conflict to overcome. You know, like life.

Witty and laugh-out-loud funny. Two equally adorable leads that I'd still like to know more about. The story twists were not entirely unanticipated but they were delightful nonetheless. Can't wait to read another by McFarlane.

A gruff, flawed, and dare I say hard-to-take hero paired with a determined heroine who knows what she wants and is neither virginal or a shrinking violet. Finally!! Rill's dominance is delicious and their chemistry is blistering. I've been dying to read a D/s story with a grown woman at the red-hot center. The scene in the woods, on the rock--whew chile! Nicely done.
