read quickly since that’s how the book is best read, otherwise it’s too slow/uninteresting, just to get to the plot twist. from everything i heard, i was expecting a crazy wild plot twist. i ended up being right in one of my guesses so the twist wasn’t as crazy as it was for others. it was kind of just, there. if you don’t pick up on thing easily, it will be shocking for sure.
the dialogue was pretty simple most of the time but i appreciated the talk about racism and the criticism on materialism and how deeply that can manipulate people.
overall, i would not read it again nor recommend it but it was a nice quick read to add to the list.
i decided this was gonna be a hate-read halfway through the book.
i understand. “the characters are meant to be unlikable”. “it’s not meant to be eventful”. i’ve heard all the arguments about why this is such a “profound, hilarious, ground-breaking” read. i saw someone say that if you like the book, it’s because a part of you relates to the main character; i agree.
no spoilers: it’s essentially a rich, skinny, pretty, white girl (i Know she declares her various privileges various times….. Anyway.) being incredibly self-indulgent, selfish, rude and annoying (again, i know she’s not supposed to be likable but that’s besides the point) for a whole year. that’s it. that’s the whole book.
also ? so many people say this book is “hilarious”. it really isn’t…. are we reading the same book??
i gave it 2 stars solely for the horribly accurate depiction of depressive episodes, trauma and anxiety. as someone who suffers from mental illness, i too wish i were privileged enough to quit everything and rest whenever i pleased lol - that’s the only small part i can relate to, certainly won’t run myself into the ground over it though. i caught myself rolling my eyes, sighing and thinking “if this white girl doesn’t just get up and get it together already …..” multiple times as i read.
this one is definitely for the gaslight & gatekeep, a24 movies, lily rose depp, “my dream is to live in new york” girlies.
i have homesick for another world on my reading list so i’ll give that a try but i’m not holding my breath for anything amazing lmao
um ????? after everything i’ve heard about sylvia plath and her “great writing”, i had never heard anyone bring up how incredibly racist she was ?????
i had to look it up after she said something along the lines of “looking yellow like a chinaman” in the first 10 pages. from what i’ve seen others reference, plath proceeds to throw in horribly racist remarks and slurs throughout the book. i only truly read a few chapters from the end, after that initial racist remark, solely because i wanted to see how she wrote someone suffering from mental illness but the ending didn’t seem to me as amazing and grand as i’ve always heard it be built up to be.
this one is definitely for the ones who wanna be fake woke/fake feminists and base their whole personality around psych wards and grippy socks.
instead of wasting your time reading this, i suggest “girl, interrupted” instead. the movie, with winona ryder, angelina jolie and brittany murphy, as well. truly iconic. much better way to spend your time.
final note: just because someone might be a good writer, doesn’t mean they get to have their racism/bigotry excused and looked over.
