so so good. i recommended it to everyone i met while i was reading it. definitely anthropomorphising but it was a case for the merits of it tbh. prose was so beautiful and bittersweet and hit me hard in all the right places. so tailored to my interests that i almost couldn’t believe it???  heartfelt and so queer and sad and hopeful and lovely and shimmering sabrina imbler you are a genius and also a wonderful mermaid/man/fish/whatever

very interesting and educational read. i did have some trouble getting into it, i'm not quite sure why, but i enjoyed the book and the paintings. i do wish the glossary and footnotes had been on the actual pages because flipping to the back was kinda frustrating! but i learned a lot and reading the cree words felt very special.

i enjoyed this! tbh it took me a year to read bc i kept starting other books…. but anyway. good book, i did enjoy the earlier parts that focused more on pre-history and ancient history more than the modern stuff (sorry but i don’t really gaf about fancy swimsuits…) but it was all still interesting. glad i read it, wish i hadn’t taken so long!

this was soooo frustrating actually because i first saw this book about a year and a half ago and thought it looked super interesting and have been wanting to read it ever since but couldn’t find it at the library, finally i find it and i read it and it is NOTHING LIKE I THOUGHT!!! i thought it was gonna be an culturally and historically informed anthropological look at americans and our conception of and need for safety … wtf turns out it’s a personal reflection with like 0 sources and that is mostly about… her??? wait i actually don’t gaf…. random lady… i was so bored and frustrated. the writing wasn’t bad but not at all what i was looking for and not what was advertised and honestly … not even that good in of itself even if i imagine i had gone in expecting this. just sorta boring tbh. very annoyed!!

an interesting read but honestly could have benefitted from another pass of editing. informed my halloween costume this year (i was a bog body) and did tell me more about a topic i’ve been interested in since i was a kid, but it was a touch repetitive and also felt like mostly conjecture? a lot of speculation… although i guess that’s what archaeology is

interesting little anthology  i picked up to have something to read on the bus - really informative and interesting, and nice to see all the different art styles. heavily focused on the 60s, which makes sense, but i would have loved a few older cults! but i figured there wasn’t enough documentation of older cults. anyway good book i enjoyed it

sorry to all my lesbians but i did not like this book… it was slow and boring and i didn’t like the main characters much and the most interesting part was the ocean but we never got to really know about it or explore it further and i just felt it fell flat. i wanted to like it i really did but the writing style also felt tiring to me… i probably won’t be reading salt slow after this even though it was on my reading list.
