Dracula by Bram Stoker

The first part of this novel was really thrilling, and I was instantly drawn into the story. Unfortunately, the last 2/3 dragged on and on. Too much Van Helsing, too many boring men wallowing in self pity and going on and on about how much they love Mina and Lucy. I was only excited again about 10 pages before the end. I can see why this is regarded as a great novel, I just lost interest partway through and stuck it out just so I could say I'd finished it. I think it'll be much more enjoyable to analyse...

A gripping read which deals beautifully with hard hitting themes such as alcoholism, abuse, marriage, and art. Possibly the most powerful of all of the Bronte novels; essential reading for anyone who is interested in the history of women's liberation.

I really enjoyed this book. It's extremely accessible. I found the plot a little aimless at first, but from about a third of the way in I was hooked. I loved the flashbacks especially.

The overarching theme appears to be one of disillusionment, and readers hoping for a satisfactory resolution may be left feeling a bit lost (not that this was a problem for me). Many questions go unanswered.

I think it's important to see this book not as a sequel or a companion to Mockingbird, but as a first draft and a preserved work in progress. It felt very special to be back in Scout's world, seeing everything through a new lens.
