Beautiful…
I read my first Ari and Dante story in 2015. Benjamin Alire Sáenz allowed me to rediscover my childhood love for literature. Then, 8 years later, I found Ari and Dante again. And their story was so comforting, so encompassing and so much, in the best way possible.
Benjamin has way with words and emotions that scratches my brain. And shout out to the book illustrator too, I want to live in that cover art.

Fun, scandalous and interesting x
One thing about me, I’m going to love a country house romance, period! Also liked the use of some ‘modern’ language

First I was afraid I was petrified… but thank god I came along for this crazy ride
Ngl, the first half of chapter one had me scrunching my face In confusion.
But once I got it; I GOT IT!
I was rushing to finish this book yet hoping it never ended.
So good, so elegant, 10-10-10s across the board.
I enjoyed it so damn much! Devoured the last chapter and started the first in the same breath.
Best advice I listened to was to go in blind.

I'm usually not a fan of this trope in my romances, where exes fight feelings while they're actively dating other people but it's done in a way that doesn't make me hate these characters.
In fact, I understand them, feel their conflict and their awkwardness like it's my own.
As I read on, I wanted to know more and more about these characters. Their fears and hopes and what they’ve been up to since last time. I felt satisfied whether the main characters ended up together or not, because I was equally invested in the individuals.
The b-plots with the side characters were fine, one or two could have been cut but it didn't drag the story down. I could vividly visualise all the locations in NY, which made the reading experience more enjoyable.
Not every book you pick up has to be relatable, but there was something comforting about awkward internships and mixing friendship groups and family expectations for your future that felt grounded. Perhaps everything might not be resolved by the last chapter but that's okay.
But everything was resolved . And I have to say I really enjoyed the final act of this book. I felt happy with the resolution, the way everything fell into place and how previous actions made sense.
This duology pulls on your heartstrings but isn’t devastating. A worthwhile read.

The book was fine but it's hard to root for characters who quite openly despise each other.
I know not everyone has to be likeable for a story to be strong (e.g. Succession), but it just felt like why should I care when no one is forcing these people to maintain their false facades or go on this dumb trip?
The reveals were mostly predictable and unsatisfying. Perhaps the passive aggressiveness on display were a bit too realistic for me. I read fiction for escapism and this did the opposite of that.
Not a bad book, simply not my taste.

Me (shakes hand emoji) friends to lovers.
But wait there's more! They're also co-workers. The chemistry is palpable. They cross the friendship line pretty early on in chapter 6 but it didn't feel rushed.
The romance is supported well by a friendship that feels grounded in reality. From sharing lunches and dinners to playing pranks and scheming together, it makes you root for the main couple even more. Things get a little less believable in the second half of the book but it's fine if you suspend your disbelief a lil bit.
It's a nice rom-com that didn't reinvent the wheel but it did a solid job :)
