The first third of the book and some chapters with just the main character’s thoughts really dragged on for me. It was a lot of “cheap” philosophy that I didn’t really care for. I was more interested in the plot and character development. I absolutely loved the ending - it was so satisfying! If it had been any different, I wouldn’t be as pleased.

I was debating between 3.75 stars and 4 stars because some parts were really boring - for example, we were given an explanation what coffee was that took a page. Like, I know what it is, I don’t need to read 35 metaphors about it.

I decided to give this book 3.75 stars because it was a veeeeeery light and fast read. It felt like a second draft of the book, the writing was raw, in my opinion. I felt too generous giving this book 4 stars. I quite enjoyed it, but I don’t think I will ever read it again.

This book is fascinating. It never dragged on, so I was always engaged in my reading. It has everything - history, excerpts from Frantz Schmidt’s journal, and philosophical thoughts and questions. However, the ending is rather bittersweet for me:
bitter - the fact that Frantz had no surviving children and grandchildren; sweet - the fact that he restored his honor.

Joel Harrington did an amazing job of researching the topic!

informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

This book is very informative. I learned so much not just about aces, but about polyamory, the LGBT community, straight people, and other things. The only problem that I have is that it is VERY repetitive. I started reading it in February and finished it two months later with the help of an audiobook. The book is very short, so I understand that shortening it even more would be problematic. However, some chapters could be summarized in several sentences but go for 20-30 pages…

Still, I highly recommend this book!
