It's giving me Not Even Bones, but that one had, you know, context

Rating: 4.3/5

Plot: 4/5 I read 80% in one sitting

Characters: 4/5 (I would have rated it 2 stars bcz I wasn't really attached to any characters, but the scientists, oh the scientists knew what they were doing. The oceanography, the blood testing, them talking about fish bones oh my god. In moments like this, I'm so damn happy to be a science student)

Writing style: 4.7/5 I WAS HOOKED

Pacing: 5/5 So fast yet so slow! The tension builds up so beautifully.

Ending: 4/5. you would think such huge mermaid discovery would spark international research, no hehe lets make a freaky documentary, which people think is edited. Well, to be fair that could very well be the plot of the second book, lemme go read it.

In depth review:
“We said ‘pretty women in the sea,’ and that was good enough, because who doesn’t want there to be pretty women in the sea? We turned monsters into myths, and then we turned them into fairy tales. We dismissed the bad parts. We were too interested in…in…in pretty women in the sea.”

For centuries, humans have reported sightings of pretty women in the sea singing in beautiful, hypnotising voices, to lure sailors into the dark waters- and drown them.

Cut out the last part! Alas, pretty women in the sea is mesmerising, but pretty murderous women? Not very bedtime friendly huh?

We follow the crew of the ship 'The Atargatis' , scientists, divers, fake mermaid performers, videographers, and a TV personality on the first trip to the Mariana Trench, where they try to film a documentary on their quest on finding mermaids.

The book has some really fascinating descriptions of the sea, science and it obviously knows what it's doing. I really enjoyed it very much. The whole book was very well researched. There were some plotholes in the scientific explanations, but the book acknowledges them and I love it for that.

My only problem with the book is that the POVs change very often. But it's fine, it allows us to explore the whole ship and also the sea.

Also someone tell me why I enjoyed the POV of a water-sample-collecting thingy so much!

0/5 (1 stars rounded up)
Boring, predictable and utterly unrealistic.

I want to give it a zero star. God curse goodreads!!!

HOW DARE THEY label it as a dystopian?!
There is not a single element of dystopia in this book. Just a boring predictable love story.
Adam has no personality, he's just a buff soldier in love with the girl!

And what a girl Juliette is, there is no depth, no story , no intense emotions to her like what?!

And The government controls everything and they just fled under their noses? hello dystopia where r u?

And no organisation to overthrow them? Just a chosen girl with no personality?

I cant believe i finished this book.

edit: After a few months, i can say this stuck with me and i love it. but i won't edit my past review so here it is:

Average Rating: 3.2/5

Katherine Talbot is a beautiful name in itself why change it to Kitty?? I was so irritated but whatever..... I can take anything after Lily Blossom Bloom...

I definitely enjoyed it while reading it, but after I've finished it, I can see a lot of not so great things... Did i like it?? Yes, but it could have been better.

Premise: 3.5/5 Slightly overused, but still a captivating London royalty themed premise. I am kinda obsessed with royal settings, but can you really blame me? :)

Plot: 4/5 Very predictable (-1), but hopeless romantics like me still love it too much
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚
Writing: 3/5 The writing really failed to set the atmosphere, such a shame, with all the magical balls and dances, there could have been so much to say, but i can see how the author chose to focus on Kitty's anxiety rather than London's magic. Still, i am very disappointed in the writing. Luckily i read it with classical music playing, so it quite made up for the atmosphere.

Characters: 3.5/5 My girl knows what she wants and i love her for that. The male lead, too, is not just a rich man with a title, he has *gasp* a personality!! Which a lot of books in this genre lack, unfortunately. I still have one little complaint. Katherine Talbot is a beautiful name in itself why change it to Kitty?? I was so irritated but whatever I can take anything after Lily Blossom Bloom... And Archie, oh my boy, I knew he is there for comedic relief, but still, he is written as a blatantly dumb fool! It's painful to read

Pace: 3/5 Hmm the story and plot itself are very fast paced, but the romance, the romance burns so slow, and I don't quite have any issue with that. But what i do have an issue with, is
Spoilerthe sudden ending......No monologue, no realisation of love, no enjoying each other's company.....the ending was definitely rushed
Spoiler

Message: 2/5 This genuinely makes me mad!!!!!SO MAD!! There was so much that could be done here, social commentary on misogyny, women empowerment, family dynamics, just life in the victorian era in general, but no, the story is so centered around Fortune Hunting and love.....it's kinda disappointing, but I can live with it, I guess
☾ ⋆*・゚:⋆*・゚

Ending:3.5/5 Expected but it was fine, afterall, who doesn't enjoy a good ole' happy ending

Description:
After her parent's demise and a broken engagement, the five sisters are left with nothing but a house, a few pennies and a huge debt to their name. To save her sisters from a mounting debt as the eldest, Katherine Talbot, Kitty, needs a fortune and fast. She leaves home to take on London and go Fortune Hunting.

Sophie Irwin takes us to the enchanting world of London, with a wide range of characters, (a manipulative young woman, a intellectual bookworm, a hesitant heir, a slow witted young boy and many more), where whatever you want or need can yours. But not without manipulation, ego stroking and flattery.

My thoughts:
Eh it's fine I guess. I always have high hopes for a Historical Romance, but this was.....well mediocre. I definitely enjoyed it while reading it, but after I've finished it, I can see a lot of not so great things...

Peace
