This is my favorite T. Kingfisher book, which doesn't really say much. I tried two other books and really disliked them (for reference, they were The Paladin's Grace and The Hollow Places). My issues with this book were the same ones I had with the other two, so I think this will be the last chance I give this author.
The good aspects of this book: It was a fun little fantasy book. I enjoyed the premise of the story. Some of the characters were enjoyable. The romance was not overstated but still interesting.
The negative: The tone of this book really reads YA, even though the MCs are in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. The humor and writing style is extremely juvenile. There are a lot of words and phrases that feel very "modern real world" so it took me out of a fantasy world. For example, this is theoretically a world where there are multiple Gods/Saints, yet a main point of the book is a Christening?? It just felt like lazy writing. You could have literally called it any other word. There were multiple other instances like this in the book. It felt unedited in this regard.

fast-paced
First of all, I wish the first 40% of the book had been the entire book. It felt too rushed through the good stuff (tension, will they won’t they). They got together too quick for me. Also, the transitions between plot and smut were too clunky for me. The plot was interesting, but it would literally be story and then an abrupt switch to smut.
Slow start but at about 40% it really picked up. The last third of the book was amazingly profound and emotional. I finished it while walking on the treadmill at the gym and people were staring at me crying. Well written! Definitely deserves the accolades.
Parts of this book were beautiful and devastating. Parts were a little jumbled and boring, perhaps due to challenging translation. Overall, I’m glad I read this book, but I’m not sure I would recommend to everyone. I wish we got more details on the plague, and in the beginning I was bored with the storylines that didn’t follow Angustias. After about 50% of the way through, it really picked up but it had a slow start.
Moderate: Animal cruelty
My favorite interim book in the Stormlight Archives so far. The story is so fun and emotional, perfectly balanced. I loved it!
I enjoyed this one, but not as much as the last book. I’m so nervous for what’s to come. 😭
Puppy Play gives me the ick apparently, you learn something new every day!
A lot of the questions I found myself asking in books 1 and 2 were answered here. This followed the same kind of pattern as the first two books as well: an interesting start, a bit of a slow middle, but then shit hits the fan and you can’t set it down in the last 20%.
