Sun of Blood and Ruin

Mariely Lares

DID NOT FINISH: 21%

The mythology is interesting, I just really wish the execution was better. The writing style feels very young to me. The romance falls flat. I have too many books on my TBR to spend more time on this one.

If Shallan has no fans, I’m dead.

It was fun to have a little “slice of life” story of 100 years before GoT, but I found some of the gravitas lacking in this book compared to the other books in this universe. The ending felt a little lukewarm to me. I know that these were originally 3 short stories, but it still lacked a little punch. Still, it was a fun light read.

A refreshing retelling of some Norse myths that are often forgotten. I really enjoyed a lot of the themes and messages from this book. However, the actual execution was lacking some heart and I didn’t find myself extremely invested in the story. I love a slow paced book, but this pace was slow without too much purpose.

What the fuck did I just read? But like, in a good way.

A really great YA book. The only issues I had with some of the dialogue/writing were because it’s meant to be YA, not due to poor quality. I love how immersive this is.

I would have loved these books if I read them when I was a preteen/teenager. Some of the stuff hasn’t aged well. Some of it is a bit too “YA” for me. But, it’s still a fun Fae story written by Holly Black, so of course I’m going to continue the series.

Wow, did I enjoy this book! What a refreshing change of pace from some of the other books I’ve been reading. The writing style is so well done and so beautiful. I found myself highlighting words on every page just to celebrate the beauty of the prose.

The story itself is extremely captivating and righteously divine in its feminine rage. I feel the beginning was a little slow, but once the “domino fell,” I was gripped. I read the last 50% in a single sitting.

The romance was such a believable slow burn.  I loved the justice and retribution in this tale. I would strongly recommend this to anyone who enjoys books like Circe, or feminist historical books.
