Very Gallant meets Witchwood Knot.
This is a slow-paced gothic fantasy book that follows less-than-perfect main characters. It was a slow start for me but once I was engaged in it, I couldnโt put it down. I loved reading about adults, adults who are emotionally stunted in one way or another, but adults.
The book isnโt long, but the author has a way of writing that brings a world to life without using too flowery of language or a ridiculous amount of metaphors. I loved the prose. The plot was full of little twists and I kept thinking I knew what was going to happen and I was definitely wrong.
Give it a read if you want a good, dark standalone with great writing.

I donโt really know what to say. This book wrecked me. SJM delivered a hell of a story.
I fell in love with characters that I didnโt feel connected to in book one. There were tons of plot twists, and gasp moments. I shed a few tears. I laughed a few times.

Didnโt like book one, tried book 2 but just couldnโt. Every single character sucks with the exception of Vivi. Bullies, power-hungry, murderers, and deceptive jerks. All of them.
I wish Jude was real so I can slap her.

I liked that Zerryn was a โweakโ mortal, but she never backed down. She was a ruthless competitor, brave, and loving. She wanted nothing but love and acceptance from her people. I loved watching Erlik and how he was softer, but no less cruel around Zerryn. His trials were a cruel means of finding out whether he would be fully accepted by his future bride. There was danger, love, betrayal, friendship, personal growth and acceptance.
I liked the side characters, the plot, and how well-written it was. I honestly wish this book was longer because I was enjoying it that much. I didnโt see much of a plot twist, but the story flowed really well, and I enjoyed the character growth.
Iโve already put in my pre-order.

I started out this book not really knowing what I was getting into. Itโs written by someone who has obvious and intimate knowledge of Shakespearean plays and stage actors. It is broken down by acts and scenes rather than chapters, and there are more than a few dialogue exchanges in Shakespearean language.
Itโs a thriller that layers in friendship, perceived betrayal, anger, jealousy, love and sacrifice. I love that the story is told through Oliverโs eyes. I loved that we were able to follow along with the story from before the incident, and then to the inevitable downward spiral into doom.
This is a good book. Quite possibly a great book. I am mourning the fact that I am done reading it. This is my first 5 star book of the year and it might be a book I reread yearly.
