This is a special book in my opinion. I don’t think I have ever read anything like it. Even a year later I am still thinking about this book and recommending it.
I loved the characters, I loved the plot, I loved the prose, and I love the author. Wonderful stand-alone fantasy book.
10/10 would recommend.

If you want to believe in magic and/or wonder why our world is almost devoid of it, read this book. This is an adult (no-spice) fantasy book through and through. The world(s) and characters are vivid and addicting to read about. You’ll root them on, worry about them, curse them, and have anxiety over the storyline.
Four worlds sit side-by-side, with spelled doors that only two magicians (the last of their kind) can make it through. Kell and Holland are the last that can open doors to other worlds to visit, as such, they work for their respective crowns. However, they are both possessions of their world’s Royal Family, however different that might be. Kell rebels and secondarily acts as a smuggler. This act leads him to smuggle a dark artifact into his safe and prosperous world.
Kell (Red London) meets Lila (Grey London - Our World) and they embark on a multi-world quest to right Kell’s wrong. White London is waging war utilizing a dead world’s magic artifact (Black London).
Believe in magic…because it’s real and enjoyable to read about.

If I gave 1/2 stars, this would be ranked higher ~3.5. The last 1/3 saved the book for me.
The first 300 or so pages took a lot for me to get into. A LOT. They were slow and, truthfully, Lila annoys me. However, the last 1/3 of the book is incredibly fast paced. I still haven’t gotten to see Kell get absolutely down with his powers, I’m waiting on that.
I have my issues. I’m not a fan of the Pepper Potts phenomenon; where someone gets powers and without any (or in this case, very little) training they just KNOW how to use them. More than that, they are awesome. That annoys me. She (V.E Schwab) does a good job of actually tying Lila’s ability to use her magic like that into the story so it makes more sense.
The king and queen SUCK. Rhy, while his personality has changed slightly, is a bright spot in this book. So is Alucard is a great addition to the cast of characters.

I was too vanilla for the 1st book, I don't know what possessed me to read this one...I'm extra-vanilla. I had to put this book down MANY times.
The early spice in the book was rape, let's be real here. For 1/2 of the book she is a victim of sex trafficking. The last 1/2 was Zade being Zade.

Overall, this book was good. It was a good end to a fun and enjoyable trilogy. It’s not a bad book, it was just my least favorite out of the three.
I had the hardest time getting through this book out of all 3. I can’t put my finger on what but I think that the plot got lost in the love story and the characters finding their way to each other and to forgiveness. There is a little spice, finally. So she scratched that itch.
The lead up to the climax of the book was slow, but the “battle” and aftermath were quite good. The villain and the backstory was meh, and slightly far-fetched, but the book series had sirens, fae, and a kraken so what the heck do I know, right?
Aoife…ugh. Just, ugh.
Also, I take issue with the fact that literally all 6 of the characters in relationships, multiple times, state “I don’t deserve you/them/her/him.” Or annoyed me to no end.

Okay…first, I went into this book blind. I didn’t read reviews and didn’t even know the background.
Now I’ve read the negative reviews about this book and all I can say is…I don’t agree. I don’t need sex in every book I read. I don’t find it anything but sweet and an enjoyable read. This “love” story is much more relatable and awkward and a super slow workplace romance. I finished this book in 23 hours and I would sell my soul to reread it for the first time.
I loved this book. I laughed, I smiled, I couldn’t put it down. At one point I literally said “I love this damn book.” Is it perfect? Probably not, but I LOVED it.
This book is fun. It’s endearing, dark, and sweet. It’s a dark cross between a fairytale world of magic with elements of Tangled and Beauty and the Beast set in an office (in my opinion). It’s what dark Disney would be like in book form. Feel free to disagree, it won’t change my mind.
Evie is sweet in a dorky, had-to-grow-up-too-soon so she doesn’t really fit in type of way. I liked her little not “haha funny” but “kinda-cringey funny” comments. I liked how she wasn’t scared by The Villain, but didn’t always agree with his methods. His ruthless behaviors didn’t change the fact that she did her job well. I liked that she genuinely cares for The Villain, her coworkers, and her job. I thought The Villain’s reaction to Evie’s humor and weirdness was completely relatable.
We don’t learn much in this book about The Villain (aside from a very limited story about how he became a villain), but we’re given a great intro story into a trilogy. I like him, his personality, and his limited inner dialogue. His POV chapters were my favorite. He’s dark but he has a softness to him that his employees don’t see and he hides from himself. I didn’t see the plot twist coming until right before it was revealed. I hate that it ended on a cliffhanger because I want more. Now.
I love Kingsley

This book is brilliant. I’m still recovering and will need a few days to wallow and process what has happened. If I did 1/2 stars this would be a 4.5.
Think;
Think;
This book was excellent!! Beyond what I could have imagined because I’ve never read another book like it! I’ll be starting the next book in the morning.
The only thing that can save their village and beat back the mist is a completed set of 12 cards; one missing for hundreds of years, the blood of one infected with magic, and the mingled souls of a maiden and a monster.
The superb piece of literature was dark and full of magic, deception, secrets, brutish royalty, and unlikely allies. I didn’t even mind that The Nightmare spoke in rhyming riddles. It does seem inconceivable to me that Elspeth and The Nightmare just never spoke of deep thing over 11 years, or maybe she just chose not to see the truth in his words…Anyway, the aspect of romance is a side plot, there to move along the story, but not overwhelm it, but damned if you don’t fall in love with Ravyn.
Elspeth has spent her life hiding, and when she meets the Captain of the Guard, her secrets and cozy life in the forest are quickly ripped away. In order to save her village and herself she must help a group of rebels find the remaining cards. Will their shared goal breed trust, contempt, or something more?
