most of the time, i had a lot of fun reading this and i enjoyed the rewind-fast forward pacing.

the times where i struggled mainly involved the prince's pov. easily one of the most boring and annoying characters out there. like, wow, you're a 14-year-old with a god complex? eye roll.

fortunately, this was counterbalanced by characters (tangerine, nanao, lemon) whose monologues i could read forever. the last few pages of the novel made me cackle.

Did not finish book. Stopped at 21%.

I just can't bring myself to care about anything that's happened so far in this novel (except for the missing passenger maybe), and there's no sign I might see anything later on that I could care about. Like, the blurb in the back sounded way more interesting than anything I've read so far here.

How many plot twist can one novel fit? A lot, it turns out. However, apart from maybe the final twist, which felt flat and a bit predictable to me, each confession surprised (shocked?) and gave a new dimension to the story. I think a lot of it is due to the purposeful way information was presented to the reader and the distinct voices of the different narrators.

things i liked:

• most of the scares were really effective ( i especially enjoyed the playground scenes), and king does a good job building tension and an atmosphere that keeps you guessing what might be real and what is still just a haunting
• i also love how king weaves in introspection and flashbacks to give us more insight into characters
• the unspoken connection between people with the shining
• an interesting look into addiction and its effect on the addict and their family; the novel also touched on something that i wondered about in the past: if you're an only child, do your parents feel like you're playing favourites between them?

things that were meh/i disliked:

• i think wendy could have been written as a sliiightly more complex character. like, the potential was there, i just know it
• the ending was a bit too sentimental to me, along with the moment where
  jack regains control to tell danny that he loves him
  . i just feel like the change in mood was a bit too sudden, even though i rooted for these characters

Life Ceremony by Sayaka Murata

I liked it even more on a re-read. Murata's stories are fascinating, unsettling and even creepy — sometimes, all at the same time — and, above all else, they are memorable. I love how this collection creates so much space for characters that just don't fit in.

Muszę przyznać, że obawiałam się trochę, czy druga część tej serii będzie trzymała poziom, ale okazało się, że czytało mi się ją jeszcze przyjemniej niż część pierwszą. Julita szybko staje się jedną z moich ulubionych bohaterek i bohaterów thrillerów. Akcja jest wartka, tajemnica i powoli odkrywane powiązania między wątkami ciekawe, kwestia cyberzagrożeń — moim zdaniem — płynniej wpleciona w wydarzenia niż poprzednio (już nie miałam wrażenia, że ktoś mi próbuje parafrazować artykuł z pisma branżowego). <Spoiler>Do tego doczekałam się scen, w których relacja między Jankiem a Julita mogła się rozwinąć, więc nie mogę narzekać.
Thriller na poziomie, aż miło znaleźć taką pozycję na rodzimym rynku.

To jest jeden z tych rzadkich momentów, kiedy film podobał mi się bardziej niż książka. Wprawdzie przeczytałam ją w dosłownie kilka dni, bo czyta się ją dość przyjemnie, i muszę przyznać, że są momenty, kiedy ciężko się od niej oderwać, to jednocześnie są też sceny, które tylko przeglądałam, bo jak dla mnie za mało wnosiły do fabuły. Zakończenie trochę odleciało w kosmos — może to przez to, że najpierw widziałam film i spodziewałam się trochę subtelniejszego punktu kulminacyjnego. Do tego czasem męczyły mnie wyjaśnienia terminów związanych z cyberbezpieczeństwem, nie zawsze wychodziły naturalnie i czasem czułam się, jakby narrator dodawał te wyjaśnienia scenicznym szeptem w stronę czytelnika.

Odsuwając te zarzuty na chwilę na bok, jest to porządny thriller z przekonywującymi postaciami, który łatwo wciąga. Na tyle, że dam szansę następnej częściej.
