First half of this was such a slog to me I was going to rate this book a 2, but it picked up a bit in the second half so I bumped it up a little.

Just didn't like Harrow from book 1, kinda hated being in her head both for that and because her perspective was so full of thesaurusitis (it was so bad I couldn't listen to the audiobook because it required too much attention to parse the sentences), was not a fan of the stylistic choices that were going on with the perspective swapping (
I get what it was doing because it was actually Gideon the whole time, but I spent so long being annoyed at it, I mostly felt relieved when she finally switched to using I
). Still thrown out by the memes.

Will pick up the third book, because I am admittedly curious where the actual plot is going, and I'm a bit stubborn.  But at least unlike this one I'm not going in knowing the book is from the perspective of a character I already dislike so maybe it'll be more a return to the first one where I thought it was generally fun but frustrating.

This book started so slow, and I didn't really like the main viewpoint character. But once we get into the actual plot it got more interesting.

Mostly I really like Ampersand and the alien culture, but Cora kinds annoys me at various points. I kinda like that she's a bit unlikable I suppose, it's not unrealistic? But it does make me kinda annoyed to be spending time in her head sometimes.

Also the ending makes me vaguely feel like I got tricked into a weird romance novel where ancient being falls for immature human girl and it makes... some sense in the story but I'm not sure I'm into it.

There might be something useful in here, I'm not sure, but the fixation on the gender binary is really making it not useful to me, an agender person. Beyond that I also found the categories of perfectionism kinda iffy and there's a big push of this book to disconnect from mental disorders like adhd and ocd and anxiety disorders despite there being a huge amount of overlap. I kinda respect the concept of not wanting to say something is wrong but to work within your natural inclinations, but I don't think it helps to pretend it's all coming from a neutral state.

Marking this as dnf so I can make a note for myself, but based on a review I watched, I don't think I want to spend time reading this book after all.
The fatphobia sounds like it will be too triggering to bother with.

This book is just very 101 level which was not what I had hoped for. I suppose if somehow you already know you are autistic and are only just realizing trans-ness and the queer community exist maybe there's some helpful things in here, but mostly it's just an explanation of what being trans is and the experiences of a particular trans man and non binary person.

I pretty much got this to read Ursula K Le Guin, and then I didn't care enough to read everyone else. I'm sure they are fine stories and I may actually read them one day.
