The dialogue is so bad.

Heavenly Tyrant by Xiran Jay Zhao
Did not finish book. Stopped at 40%.

I think I started this too soon after finishing The Poppy War. Similar themes, ideas, worlds, etc. Definitely different writing, and I like Wu Zetian better than Rin.

Still, what is happening in Heavenly Tyrant is very close to the current reality, and it's hard to live it and read it.
