The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley

A unique book with romance, time travel, historical fiction, and thriller all in one. The Ministry of Time offers a completely unique storyline and with lots of to add to the narrative. The way Bradley explored bring the past into the present was so thought-provoking to read and consider, considering how individuals from different time periods perceive the world around them.
The author addressed so many interesting themes but one that stood out to me was sex and sexuality in various contexts from different times, from dating to sexual orientation. It's refreshing to see these themes explored in such a multifaceted way.
Unfortunately, "The Ministry of Time" didn't quite capture my attention. It's not the book's fault; I think it just wasn't the right time for me to read this story. After consuming a lot of dystopian content recently, I feel like I need a break to fully appreciate a book like this. Under different circumstances, I believe I would have really enjoyed this book and fallen in love with Graham Gore.
Would I recommend this book? Yes. Take a chance on it. It is just a different sort of story.

The Celestial Wife by Leslie Howard

This book delves into the complex and often troubling world of polygamy within fundamentalist religious communities; shedding light on important issues that many may not be aware of. The author bravely tackles the horrors of polygamy, child abuse, control, and power dynamics that exist within these societies, bringing these critical topics to the forefront for readers to contemplate. Exploring this topic in a fiction novel was the reason I wanted to read this book.
However, the writing style is somewhat naive and simplistic, with the topics not explored in as much depth as they could have been. More research and detailed writing on both the cult aspects and the history of winemaking in BC could have enriched the book and provided a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter.
Overall, while the book touches on important themes, it may have benefitted from a deeper exploration and a more mature writing style. It is more suited to a young adult audience, with elements of a coming-of-age novel woven throughout. Despite its shortcomings, this book serves as an introduction to the realities of polygamy in fundamentalist religious communities and the need for greater awareness and understanding of these issues.
Would I recommend this book? Sadly, no. Only if you would really like to read more on this topic. However, I would suggest looking for a different book.

What a truly beautiful book this is, and one that is meant to be savoured. The moment I began reading, I knew I was going to enjoy this book for its elegant prose and as an added bonus it's a story of books within a book (as a book lover this theme always helps pique my curiosity).
The writing in this novel is simply exquisite, with beautiful prose that create a rich ambience for a the story set in post-war Barcelona. The characters are expertly developed, drawing you into their world and making you feel a part of their journey. The intricate plot is full of interconnected twists and turns, with love, suspense, drama, and vivid imagery. Everything you want when you are going to sit down and enjoy a book.
The Shadow of the Wind is now one of my top books of all time, and I understand why the ratings for this book are so high. It is a masterful storytelling that will leave you spellbound and happy to dive back into its lyrical prose every time you pick it up. My only disappointment is to know that all the books I can ever read by Carlos Ruiz Zafón are written, as I am certain I will read them all and want more.
Would I recommend this book? Yes! I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a beautiful and captivating reading experience. This is a novel I will share with friends and family for the rest of my life.
