Book club read.
I really enjoyed the writing style of this book. A fun fantasy read with an interesting main character and the words written throughout the story were very intentional. I did struggle with some of Tiras’ actions and I wanted Lark to be a little more certain of herself but the book ended with a good amount of character growth for her.

This felt like an ode to a life of learning and longing. I found myself thinking about the infinite paths my life could have taken and one of them being as video game designer. I found the relationships to be difficult and unfair but true to what a lot of people experience that are still learning who they are.
2.5 stars. I enjoyed some plot points but cringed at a lot of this book and almost DNFed three quarters through. I’m glad the book ends with Piper learning to love herself, I just struggled to buy in to how quick Piper and Brendan became settled in this new life together. It felt a little unrealistic.
This book is like reading a 10 episode tv series script that should have just been a movie. Sometimes it got too lost in the details. It was either really slow or really triggering and traumatic. BUT the themes about poverty, addiction, foster care, small towns, generational trauma and growing up were really thought through. This book felt like I was reading a biography from my hometown where every experience happened to someone I’ve known or lived myself. It felt really harsh at times and just when I thought I was at the lowest of the story, it managed to dig deeper.
I am honestly in disbelief that this is the same author who wrote acotar because this story was so thoughtful with many plot lines converging from stories all the way back to the prequel. Each character was able to stand on their own beyond Aelin and I loved having multiple characters to root for. Some of my favorites being Yrene, Lorcan, Elide, Lysandra and Manon. I felt like everything came to a head in this final book of the series and I’m quite satisfied with where it was left.
My qualms are mostly around the last 300 pages where SJM couldn’t figure out how to describe war anymore without sounding beyond repetitive. Her writing got a little lazy. She started repeating things in 3s and really liked to compare fast things to shooting stars. But if that’s the price to pay for getting to experience the wonderful world of Erilea, I’m more than willing.
Some of my favorite moments:
- Elide going after Lorcan on the battle field and pretty much Elide’s entire character
- Aelin losing it saying “Take it off” repeatedly about the iron mask
- Manon opening her heart up slowly to Dorian, her Wyvern and the Thirteen
- The Thirteen Yeilding!!! Well 12 technically. We are ALL crying
- The Little Folk showing Aelin and friends the way through Doranelle and the little folk in general
- Yrene’s name being chanted for defeating Erawan
- Fenrys and Aelin’s secret language and when she uses it in the end to save him from Maeve’s darkness
