I have read this book so many times that I have lost count.

The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold

It's sort of like one of those 80s movies where the socially awkward guy has to figure out life after failing to get into his dream college and he doesn't get the girl. So he goes to space and accidentally becomes a mercenary blockade runner.

It's still a very entertaining read. I will be continuing on with the series. I just wish Miles's parents were in it more.
