An uncovering of a forgotten tragedy that left me as fascinated with the media coverage and lack of standards of the day as withe learning the intricacies of Belle’s crimes. It sometimes deviates into so much background it can start to distract: an entire chapter on Chicago for new arrivals before we ever get to the main subject of the book, for instance, or the exploration of other “serial murderers” of the time., but I was definitely reading (listening) for the story of Belle Gunness. Some of that reaction may have been because I was listening to it versus reading it. Ultimately this is the thorough exploration of a mystery that will never be solved.

Funky, sometimes infirm in what exactly might be going on (ie, the CAUSE in Area X), but the wiring is lyrical and immerses you in lush greenery, a solid sense of place and a mystery that centers the story — even while the main character, the biologist, explores the relationship with her husband while she explores Area X.
I don’t even know if I like this premise/ the story itself, but I can’t stop reading because I want to know WHAT is IS…. And I suppose that makes this book (and the other 2 in the series) good….!
I listened to this as an audiobook: and as an audiobook it was excellent- well-performed by a stable of actors.
I wouldn’t have finished the book if I were reading it, but the performances in this made me stick around. A plot-driven book that relies on thoroughly implausible twists and turns. Made a very long drive much easier, tho! As an audiobook, it was great!
