Engaging. Tranquil. Calm.
This was the first book I read by Ishiguro and I'm glad I read it! The story jumps around between different parts of Kathy's life, but Ishiguro does this seamlessly, and without confusion. The reader is slowly given enough information that you can continually guess what has happened, without revealing it all until the end. This work was well written, thorough, and deliberate. It kept me wanting to discover what happens, what these children went through and ultimately, what they became. This book made me want to pick up another by Ishiguro for sure! I recommend if you're looking for something calm and questioning, to grab this book!

I struggled with writing this review.
I found this book difficult to get into and keep reading. There were three stories, all quite similar, throughout the book. It was a slow, awkward read for me. Multiple times I wondered what I was supposed to be looking forward to or what questions had yet to be answered since none had been posed. I had no inclination to pick it up again when I put it down - which was more often than usual. Even after finishing it, I wonder what the story was. I'm sure this story resonated with some people, but in my opinion, it was missing the hook that grabs the reader and has them eagerly turning pages. It seemed vague when it should have been specific and specific about things that didn't add anything to the story. Let me know what you thought! Maybe I'm missing something...

Tense. Emotional. Steady.
Kim creates a calm, flowing story about tragedy and loss. The flow seems to stay steady, like life, moving forward even as people's lives get turned upside down. The story talks about difficulties of immigration and parenthood throughout the four-day trial. Kim's work forced the reader to experience the tragedy as if you were there, in the courtroom, like a juror, watching this all unfold and wonder who was to fault and what the outcome would be. Well written!

Disturbing. Satisfying. Gripping.
Jewell writes about a relatable character and has you constantly hoping the best for her as the story goes on. The more characters you meet, and the more information you're given, the more suspicious the reader seems to become. Changes on every chapter had me wanting to know what happens, but in all honesty, the ending was anti-climactic, but an enjoyable read!

Gripping. Helpless. Chilling.
Paris makes the reader frustrated and sympathetic to the characters. Knowing the character's situation and hopelessness cannot end well. Personally, I found this book difficult to read, knowing many people experience hopelessness in their domestic relationships, even if not as dire as this situation presents. The middle seemed to drag on but after finishing, realized the importance. Wonderfully crafted!

Sudden. Page-turning. Grief.
Serle pulls you in and lets you know the characters while promising something changes. I picked this one up, and stayed up reading it until the story ended. It brought smiles, laughs and tears. Her quick tone and easy plot allow for endless possibilities, all while promising drastic change. By the time you know where it's headed, it's already past that and you're closing the book, tear on you cheek, smile on your face. I would keep tissues handy and friends close while reading this one.

"But hatred is a curved blade. And the harm we do, we do to ourselves."
Thought-provoking. Reminiscent. Meaning.
Albom has a way of intricately weaving small things into one large and familiar story. This book is no exception. The small moments and pieces of life all come together. Not just one life or a few lives, but humans together. The reader is left reflecting on an average life, a lonely man, and yet, Albom has you close the book with a smile. Very enjoyable read!
