This book had a strong beginning, but as you keep reading it gets highly confusing, and things that you think are going to matter don't end up mattering at all. The writing was beautiful, the story itself just wasn't great. I feel like there was something I was supposed to "get" from reading this, and if that's the case, I completely missed it.
I'm sure a lot of people will really like this, but I'm just gonna say it ... this bored the hell out of me. I think what we've learned today is that chick-lit is just NOT my thing. And I'm kinda sad I wasted my book of the month credit on this :(
and that's why we don't read books by white men from the 1930s
I can't deny that Catherine Lacey is a talented writer, but this book fell SO flat.
i literally have no choice, it's 5 stars. a new all-time fave.
I put this on hold at the library hoping to read it in October, but it just recently became available. I went into this hoping for a fun, witchy read that would be nice for Halloween, but was so surprised by how academic and atmospheric this was! I'll definitely finish the series.
I loved every second of this. Hard-hitting, character-driven fiction really just gets me. Going into this read I was afraid it'd be boring (as per usual before reading any adult contemporary) but The Dutch House delivered.
And I'm obsessed with Danny and Maeve. I loved them to pieces.
