Radio Silence by Alice Oseman

I got a sense of realness from this book that was refreshing. It was slow to start but picked up for me about a quarter of the way through. I enjoyed the social commentary aspect. It was mild in comparison to the fantasy books I read a lot of, but touched on modern ideals about the pursuit of happiness for this generation and breaking the social norms that our parents grew up with. Oseman is definitely a forward thinker, and I respect that in an author. I also appreciated the diversity and LGBTQ friendly characters. Not my new absolute favorite, but definitely worth a read!

I’m so conflicted! I liked this book for all of the same reasons it was disliked by others. The flowery writing! Her metaphors are beautiful! She’s an artist with her words. It’s doesn’t have to make rational sense to instill a feeling, which I loved. That being said, I felt the plot was lacking, the characters were shallow, and it took me until the last few chapters to be properly enthralled in the actual story.

I want to preface this review by saying, I just read The Passengers and The One, (both by John Marrs) and I fell in love with both of them. This story was set up to be amazing for me. The same author of the other two books I loved and it’s about a detective and a serial killer! I mean... kismet. But for some reason I didn’t connect with the characters and it was a little slow for me. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good book and I still enjoyed it. But I’m not OBSESSED like I am with the other two.

I had no idea I was getting into an unfinished series... GAH! Now I have to wait!!! The plot follows a lot of the same tropes that I’m used to from my other beloved fantasy series. That said, I’m super into it. I love the characters. There were a few twists that definitely surprised me. And I’m BUMMED that I have to wait for the 4th book now! I’m not ready to leave this world yet.

I seriously did NOT see that twist coming! I listened to the audiobook and there was an interview with the author at the end which I found incredibly fascinating and endearing. I understand why this book was such a success. Fully thrilling!
