Wow (x10!) I adored this book from start to finish. It definitely started out a bit confusing, with the world building seemingly happening in too quick a pace. But I was wonderfully wrong.

I adored the complexities of the characters that, on the surface, seem so simple but deepen as you get to see them come to the apex of the story.

The plot twists! Oh. My. God. Some were definitely telegraphed, but luckily we won’t see the outcome of them until the next installment! I’m excited to preorder the next one!

Overall 4.6/5.

I've always been a sucker for dragons in my fantasy novels, and this really filled that need. While I feel like the characters could have had more depth, and there was some very obvious plot twists, I was engrossed in the plot and the enemies to lovers slow burn~

I think if I could change anything, is that there was a bit more expansion on the existing relationships and not just the ones formed. (Like I wanna know more about the MC's dad) But I also know we will likely get more in the sequel! Already pre-ordered and ready to dive back in.

Can I read this one for the first time, again?

As someone who was dabbling in translation in college, this novel truly pulled at my heart strings and reminded me of how much fun translation is, how powerful language is. It drew me in so quick, and I have to say, I wish I had more time to read it once I started.

The characters were both endearing and frustrating, disgusting and menacing. It truly felt like I'd have known about them from history books and poetry. Without spoiling the book, I just have to say that the themes of colonialism, abolitionism, consumerism were so well thought out and explained in a way that made the complexities of the world much less so. The footnotes were a wonderful edition and almost felt as though I really was reading historical text.

5/5 stars, and heavily recommended. R.F. Kuang is truly one of my favorite authors, and I have yet to read her amazing series! (That is on my TBR shelf~)

Solid MC and decently interesting universe. I loved the essence of it and I felt that there was so much sass in the lead. Granted, some of the pacing was a bit slow and it felt as though it was just a prologue to the potential next segment. (In a good way!)
