Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden

at long last, i have finally broken down and read 'memoirs of a geisha'... i think the strongest testament to this book's wonderfulness is the fact that i was able to pick it back up to continue reading after the short interim i took to read the new harry potter book. i usually fall into a short depression/bereavement period post-Potter and don't want to read anything, but this book drew me right back in. the story is just absolutely engrossing, and it is as ornately and delicately detailed as the world it paints for the read. simply a beautiful story.
The Neon Bible by John Kennedy Toole

I really needed to read this book to remind me that southern lit is where it's at. I was a little skeptical of this book, being a huge fan of 'A Confederacy of Dunces'. I knew that it wasn't the same type of book; more serious. I put off reading it for a long time because of this.
And I shouldn't have! It's beautiful. It's one of those books that has passages that will make you cry out of nowhere. You know the ones- the kind of beautifully described and poignant sentences that aren't even emotionally charged, just talking about a wall or a piece of fabric or a childhood memory, but the way it's done just squeezes tears out of your heart.
To top it off, this asshole was only 15 years old when he wrote this book. Read it!
