Unique idea. Would have been better if sexual violence wasn’t the main plot point. I understand that the author was trying to explain the reality of the main characters situation but if your plot doesn’t move without excessive sexual violence, it’s probably not a good plot. Was honestly uncomfortable to read and I just wanted the book to end. I would have DNF’d but I was told repeatedly to just get through the first book because the 2nd and 3rd are really good.

I am giving it 2 stars because for the 20% of the book that wasn’t focused on r*pe, the idea behind it was super unique and I this could have been a really great book.

3.5 stars. This book was SUBSTANTIALLY better than the first. I was invested the entire time. The main character is kind of annoying and things were fairly predictable. But I enjoyed it and definitely reading the rest of the series.

3.5. I enjoyed this book. I went in with low expectations and honestly that was key because I wasn’t disappointed. This is a book that is heavily hyped up on social media and I wouldn’t say it fully lived up to that hype but it was still good. After I finished it I read the reviews and the biggest critique people had was there wasn’t a ton of character development. And in a way yeah that is true, but I was still invested enough in the characters to care. The main focus of the story was on the mystery and intrigue of Caraval and trying to figure out exactly what was going on. Sprinkle in some romance and it easily kept my attention.

This was definitely YA, but the characters ages are never talked about so it was easy to picture the characters in their mid-early 20’s. I say it’s YA because there aren’t any adult themes aside from a few very quick and vague references. And the main character was pretty naïve at times and just the overall writing just feels very YA. Overall it was really unique, not really what I expected, but I will read the rest of the series for sure.

Also, do not look up fan art until after like book 2 unless you want stuff spoiled

I’m not going to rate this because I’m honestly not sure how. I started off super strong but then boom, every trope I hate with a passion is thrown in. It could have been so good but I just couldn’t get past it. I did love the characters though and was rooting for them. Just couldn’t get past that annoying trope.

5/5 I read this on KU and am buying it in paperback immediately. This is an amazing example of an enemies to lovers sports romance. Character development was amazing. It’s a sports romance where the guy isn’t a player which is rare. The banter was fantastic and at times I actually laughed out loud. The conflict was believable and not cringe worthy or toxic. The build up to the spice was very well done and I loved the dual POV. This is an great quick read and has all the pieces to make a great book. This will definitely be my go too sports romance comfort read

DNF’d after 26%. He’s the fun, flirty, ex playboy, older brothers best friend. She’s the workaholic, no fun, “I don’t ware makeup and that makes me different”, i don’t sleep because sleep isn’t productive, I totally don’t still have a crush on my older brothers best friend.

I cringed at the level of stereotypical and honestly misogynist this book is. I almost stopped after the first chapter because the guy said something along the lines of, “she seems like the type of girl who would get mad at me for being and gentleman and holding the door open for her because that’s how women are now”. And honestly it didn’t get much better from there.

2.5-3. Ok now I get what people say about the lack of character development in these books. It was a lot more apparent in this book and it felt even more YA than the first. I still read it fairly quickly and thought it was a cool idea but I wasn’t invested enough in the characters or their relationships. Also the big reveal was a total let down. I wish the author would have focused more on the character development and less time on some of the random plot nonsense that seems kinda irrelevant. Also, in the epilogue when I found out Tella was only 16 for this entire book was cringy especially considering the guys in these books are like immortal or non aging or whatever. I’ll read the next one because I already own it but I’m not thrilled.

3.5-4. This book was cute. This whole series was meant for like a 13 year old so once I came to terms with the fact that this is very much YA, I was able to just enjoy the story and not be so judgmental. So with that it is a 4 star YA read, but if I was rating it compared to the other books I’ve read that are more advanced I would rate it a lot lower. This book had way more character development that the other 2 for sure, but the development of plot and characters was still rough. it was corny, and clique but the world was unique and the ideas were cool. I enjoyed it.

I would pay so so much money for another author to take this series, age up the characters, make it more grown up, and really develop the world and the characters. This ideas behind this are incredible and the world needs this to happen.
