"The stars, when traced by the human eye, formed constellations, and the flowers, linked together, spoke to her. They said, "My love."

AMAZING. Just as beautiful, magical, and heart wrenching as the first read. The YEARNING. The TENSION between Casiopea and Hun-Kame and the progression of their relationship means everything to me!!! Like that's his girll. She's way stronger than me because I would have thrown everything away and taken his offer. Anyway I live for Mayan mythology finally getting some love and representation, I've been trying to spread the Gods of Jade and Shadow agenda.

To view the world through James Baldwin's eyes is to love. I hope to carry these words with me for many years to come <3

some favorite passages:

"I have a right to tremble
when you begin to crumble.
Your life is my life, too,
and nothing you can do
will make you something other
than my mule-headed brother."
-Mirrors (for David)

“Love,
love has no gifts to give
except the revelation that the soul can live:
on a coming day,
you will hear, from afar,
I, your lover, pray.
You will hear, then, that prayer that you cannot hear now,
and, when you hear that sobbing, boy, rejoice,
and know that love is the purpose of the human voice!”
-For A.

love this as much as i did the first time i read it! obsessed with victor and eli being “bonded” to each other in a sinister way almost like being destined to be enemies. enemy soulmates if you will.

it’s interesting that the main critique folks have of this book is the miscommunication between the characters. how so much pain could be avoided had they just “talked to each other.” but i find it so much more realistic that there is an incredible weight of what is unsaid. how your pride, stubbornness, and emotions completely blind and silence you. sometimes “just talking” to someone can feel so draining that you’d rather walk away from the situation. it also doesn't help that every time they DID try to talk, they still found something to misinterpret.

absolutely adore the way gaiman and pratchett write about their characters. they describe quirks that are specific to each character so effortlessly and creatively. for example (my fav), in writing about DEATH’s voice:

“…his voice was a dark echo from the night places, a cold slab of sound, gray, and dead. if that voice was a stone it would have had words chiseled on it a long time ago: a name, and two dates.”
