3.5 stars
Though this book was predictable in parts and there was some serious info dumping at the beginning I felt an extreme connection to Josie as a narrator and for me that is important in a book.

Emotions.

The cover and the maps are so beautiful.

The banter between Mister Kindly and Eclipse is one of my favourite parts of the book. Also because Eclipse constantly refers to Mister Kindly as a moggy I imagine that Eclipse has a British accent, which makes it even more entertaining.

I heard somewhere that people don't like the footnotes, I, however, am a huge fan. The narrator's voice sometimes gets lost in the main narrative, it does though remain more constant in the footnotes and is often humorous.

The world building didn't feel as strong in this one, and I often had to refer back to the map to work out where the story was taking place, which did pull me out of the story.

Mia's character felt more grounded in this one and that helped keep me in the story more.

I don't think I mentioned this in my review of 'Nevernight' but the smut scenes made me feel somewhat uncomfortable, that continued in this book, and I ended up skimming or skipping them.

The part where the other gladiators try to rebel and Mia betrays them and then later it is revealed that she actually is helping them annoyed me. Not because she helped them, but because I felt blindsided by it, it made me feel distanced from her as a character. I'm not sure how to explain it but I feel like I would enjoyed the scene at the execution bout more if I'd been in on the plan.

The ending though. Ahh, I need the next book now, I just have so many emotions and questions.
