Personally I think hating your name in this was is very 2010. “This was the family history that Reeva had been brought up with and occasionally tried to amend online so it included her job title and omitted the nine-letter horror she’d be burdened with at birth” Like I don’t go by my legal name either but that’s because I was given the name Sami by my mom and she decided my teachers should call me that and so people just know me as that now ya know. I would never dare call my name a horror.
I really really really loved this book! I think everything about it was phenomenal. I love Madi’s writing style and the slow mystery of what wrong with Amelia’s daughter.
The only slightly negative thing I have to say is I wish there had more of a focus on Maya reconnecting with her culture and heritage over the course of the book. It seemed like such a major theme that never got explored other than to say she didn’t feel much connection to it.
I feel like if you're going to have (even surface level) conversations about race, sexism, and intersectionality in your book you really shouldn't have Harry Potter references sprinkled in. Especially in the year 2022.
The first ~50% of the book was pretty good but the last half was just so cringe. It just felt very white feminist which is incredibly disappointing coming from a Desi woman.
