Amazing way to make a prequel interesting; keeping the characters the same and similar story, yet intriguingly different . Still just as reflective and poetic as We Were Liars. Amazing author!!!

The dialogue of the black characters versus the white characters is a little distasteful. Even if a black character had more education and class than many of the white characters, they were still made to talk like uneducated idiots.
Even though the main character is self educated and only ever lived in the swamp
she talks more "refined." Just put a bad taste in my mouth. Also don't know how to feel about a white author using the "n-word." It felt unnecessary to the story. The time jumps from past to present also add nothing and just make the story drag on.

It was so sweet and lighthearted, bu  also tackled great subjects like women in STEM and SPOILER- sexual harassment. The characters are so loveable and the tropes are just *chefs kiss. Definitely a rereader.

I just LOVED the deep and real insight into the struggles of women in this time period! You can absolutely tell the author put in so much research to make this book feel real. The emotions and struggles of the sisters were relatable, raw, saddening, and difficult. It was never boring!

There are so many characters and separation in the characters stories until the way end that I couldn't remember them all and it was hard to keep track what happened to who.  That being said, this contemporary piece was so reflective and eye opening to the individual struggles of natives and even minorities as a whole. I really enjoyed that insight. I also just hated the ending was so vague that <spoiler!!!!!!!!> you can't even tell if half the characters die or not! Ugh.
