This book is the literal definition of heart-warming, and is the first middle grade book I've read (since I was in middle school myself) that's made me laugh out loud. Huett weaves together old legends, engaging quips, and refreshing lessons in an all together fascinating Christmas tapestry. He world-builds like he's been doing it for centuries, and won't ever leave you behind floundering in the details. This is a book I want to recommend to all my twenty-something year old friends (and not just to be ironic), because it gave me all the plot satisfaction found in a book for older readers, while letting me enjoy the hilarity and adorableness of a typical middle-grade novel. I read this book in March and let me tell you -- I've never felt more Christmas-y in my life.

Hillbilly Elegy changed my perspective in 261 short pages. The author takes you along as he makes his way from child-in-distress to wildly successful adult, and is relatable every step of the way. He approaches the disastrous problems of his childhood with a scientific thoroughness without sacrificing the familial affection that drips from every page. I truly felt as if I'd read a heartwarming novel that, while not preachy, gives every chance for hope of a better path for those "hillbillies" that come after Vance.

The confusion rife in the plot of this book lends itself to close sympathy with the main character. The ending just as much a surprise to the reader as it is to Adam Dearden. Endearing, but utterly unhinged, supporting characters make this an overall entertaining, but not necessarily light and airy, read.

Painfully good language and harsh realities make this book a truly worthy read.

An insightful read, turning large and small life frustrations into unsettlingly relatable comedy. From depression to dumb dogs to killer geese, this book covers a wide range of wholly unrelated topics and somehow brings them together under the roof that is Allie Brosh to make a whole - and wholly enjoyable - book.
