Emily Henry

I tried so hard. I really did, but I could not connect with these characters at all. I think it’s so dumb that Daphne even agrees to go to the wedding. Like I get it, she was angry and said it in the heat of the moment but girl… really? I’m also realizing, as much as I love Emily Henry, all of her characters feel the same to me, especially the side characters and I felt like I’ve read about these exact same people in her other books and just could not do it anymore.

Greta is hands down one of the most, if not the most, complicated/frustrating/morally WRONG characters I’ve ever read. AND I LOVED IT. I love when crazy, messed up women do crazy messed up things because you know her actions will have consequences and that it’ll blow up in her face and she knows it too but Greta is so set in her ways that you have no choice but to respect (or at least disappointedly accept) her for the terrible decisions she makes. This book was also surprisingly funny because of Greta’s sarcastic narration and I get that not many people would like this book because of how detached every single character seems from their trauma or the trauma of others but I personally loved it for that exact reason.

I really liked a lot about this book. I enjoyed the messages about human nature and the premise of a post-pandemic world where majority of the population is gone. My issue with the book is the absurd amount of characters who show up once or are mentioned in passing and then nothing else really comes out of it. I feel like the prophet could have been explored more as those sections were very interesting. We see all these characters like kirsten and clark who we follow for a good bit of the story but I don’t believe there was much development in their characters except the fact that certain aspects about the passed clicked for them. Aside from that i just felt like the author tried to do so much and didn’t give us enough time with each story line.

I was not expecting to love this book as much as I did. Helga is a young, biracial woman, trying to find a community while facing the harsh realities of America in the 1920s. She goes from Naxos, to Harlem, to Copenhagen, to Alabama, all in search of the connections and happiness she never received as a child. This aimlessness in which Helga goes about her life is so incredibly relatable and her indecision perfectly encapsulates what it is like to be in search of your place in the world. Added to this already perfect story, is Helga’s uncertainty about where or who she belongs to racially which also plays a huge role. She steps into white and black spaces with an affliction that comes from not being accepted by either in her childhood and it’s so inspiring to see her work her way through her own conflicting emotions to try and uncover what it is that would make her truly feel fulfilled.

This book started off really strong. I loved Daniel and the setting was straight out of a movie but around 40ish% it got SOOOOO annoying. I understand they have very incompatible lives blah blah blah but I don’t need to hear that every other page. And Daniel STAND UP a town you lived in all your life, a house you raised $50,000 to buy and you were gonna give all that up for someone who literally lived like 4 hours away? Please. I had to start skimming the second half of this book and I swear I have never rolled my eyes at a book this much.

kinda crazy this book has no trigger warning so tw: grooming. aside the very inappropriate and gross relationship the story and mystery was good, def really crazy but sort of predictable. the whole story revolves around this creepy relationship and i feel like certain things were glossed over that shouldn’t have been, especially at the end with the girls’ dealing with the aftermath. all that aside solid story to read quickly.
