Mother of Death & Dawn by Carissa Broadbent
I wish I'd stopped at book 1. Book 1 was SO GOOD, but books 2 and 3 were sooo exhausting to get through. Well-written, amazing characters, and interesting plot - just sooo dense.

This book was really CUTE. And that is the most accurate adjective I have for it. The characters were quirky, diverse, lovable - BUT I wanted SO much more. More depth, more plot, more time for these relationships to develop. I have nothing bad to say about this book, but it also wasn’t an absolute knock-out. It was light & fluffy and a little bit witchy so if that’s what you’re looking for - than this is a winner!
If you’ve read The House in the Cerulean Sea, this book will feel like a shallower, witchy version and that’s why this book doesn’t quite hit it for me because TJ Klune just did this storyline so much better.

I’m so sorry to be in the minority, but this book just did not connect with me. I found it to be unbearably slow. I kept waiting for each anecdote to be a little more interesting, and while there was some beautiful imagery and powerful messages, they were ultimately just small treats amidst a largely underwhelming story. I didn’t have an issue with the narration nor the perspective, but it was the characters that just didn’t do it for me. I would not have finished it if not for the podcast episode we have out in it now.

If I wasn’t challenging myself to read 12 holiday romances this month, I would not have finished this one. It was less than 300 pages so I pushed through but WOOF.

I can’t really explain why, but this was just so underwhelming. The characters were far too polite/formal that there was no real chemistry. I wasn’t invested in anything and totally skimmed the end. So bland.

Such a cute Christmas Day read!
This is my second Christina Lauren and I was fairly unimpressed with the first one, so going into this I had low expectations but it was cute and Christmasy!
I almost never wish a book was longer, but I could've used some more family/chosen family background.
With a lot of side characters, some of them felt pretty irrelevant. And I wasn't totally a fan of how the third-act conflict was handled by the MMC.
The ground-hog day time loop was cute, and I'm glad it didn't last the whole book. The childhood friends to lovers romance was the standout part of this book in an adorable Christmas setting.
