hazy and sensual, like a cocteau twins song floating through iridescent mist - anaïs nin's world lingers, soft and hypnotic. i’m convinced i’ll never read better erotic stories than these. i liked little birds equally, but this collection has more depth and variety. not feeling very generous at the moment to change my rating for little birds, but honestly both are solid five stars
This is exactly what you'd expect from Alain de Botton, nothing more, nothing less. Far from the philosophy of love he seeks to offer, this is a half-baked psychological analysis of dating and relationships. I don't see anyone over 18 finding this garbage useful. He packages the most trite, surface-level insights in elegant language. The story predictably ends with his girlfriend's revelation of infidelity, and the very next paragraph begins with Kant and I just couldn't continue after that. 2.5/5 for a few quotable lines.
Sounds a lot like David Lynch's "Catching the Big Fish," which makes sense given that both of them are involved in the TM movement. It's not meant to be read in one sitting, which I regret doing. I kind of get the hate for the book - I expected it would venture into the creative process of music production but it reads like a long self-help Twitter thread instead. I still liked it. It's very sincere.
