The scene at the beginning

where the FMC flashed back as a child watching her father beating and raping her mother

felt as if it were more for shock value than for actual content or plot that mattered. Also, the dialogue all felt off, stilted. The conversations didn’t feel even a little bit believable. And then there was a moment described where the FMC felt enough fear to scream and run, but it didn’t feel realistic at all, just obnoxiously dramatic. There wasn’t any buildup to it, there weren’t many descriptors. Just suddenly she was terrified, for no reason.
