Always loved Intan’s way of words. Creepy, tense, sometimes a bit funny. Has a vibe of those old mystery books with retro paintings as the covers.

good premise and concept, im a sucker for weird and perverse books. i think it’s made for a very specific demographic of people who can stomach it so i understand what people are saying abt the grotesque-ness of it. but im more horrified with all the plot holes, loose ends, and the ending. i really wanted to give it 5 stars because i really like the story, but all these povs and not enough resolutions…

it was quite funny but i think the language was too mundane for one of those “no plot rly going on” books….. i enjoyed it fine it just got quite boring at some parts.

“I had so much to say to her … enough to fill a lifetime.”

This book took its sweet time to reveal itself, just like Raif Efendi; but it was so so so worth it. What a bittersweet, short book. Don’t be fooled by it’s length though because it did feel way longer than it is. The proses are beautiful and the observations made by all the characters sent me into tiny little ponderings. Will be one of my favorite books to reccomend, which is why I now understand people’s treatment towards this book.

He had looked at her then and again saw something ugly about himself reflected back at him, in her gaze.”

keep seeing this in every book store in london, never bought it. finally got an ebook version and i wish i had bought a copy in london. short, bitter, and hits you right in the gut.

very much reads like a lecture, and as informative as one. wasn’t as “fun” of a read as i thought it would be but still enjoyable nevertheless. the writing is witty although there’s probably too much on the authors’ lives themselves (history) rather than analysis of their work/impact as female writers of their time. also quite interesting set of authors chosen to be the subjects of this book, i wish it included someone from 1900s beyond—perhaps Sylvia Plath or Mary Oliver. But alas, solid.
